Things I Couldn’t Tell You is a personal book and multi-media project that started when I inherited a trunk from my late father. In the trunk were things such as family photos, home movies, newspaper clippings, and my father’s vintage Brownie film cameras. My father had kept some of my toys and memorabilia, most of which I remembered, but there were many photos and movies of me as a child that I’d never seen before. Looking through the things in the trunk made me feel oddly disconnected from my past, like I was a participant in someone else’s play. To build the narrative, I created new photos and video, combine them with items from the trunk to capture elusive memories and bring them visually into to the present. The project ultimately explores how our experiences as children form who we are as adults whether we remember the experiences or not.
